Some white wines seek to please immediately; others set out to tell a larger story. Beyond the Clouds clearly belongs to the latter. Elena Walch created it with the 2000 vintage as the estate’s flagship white cuvée, intended to express the best a harvest can offer. In the glass, the name never feels overstated. This wine combines breadth, elegance and precision without becoming heavy. It is one of the estate’s defining labels for those who enjoy powerful whites that remain agile, complex and clear.
Origin and terroir
Beyond the Clouds is made from a careful selection of Elena Walch’s best white grapes. The blend changes slightly from year to year because it is not governed by a fixed formula, but by the best result of each harvest. This freedom, combined with rigorous selection in the vineyard, is central to its identity.
Grape varieties
Elena Walch describes the wine as the best of its white varieties, with Chardonnay as the principal component. Chardonnay gives the cuvée its backbone, while the other varieties add depth, nuance and complexity.
Ageing and vinification
The grapes are harvested and processed together on the same day. Fermentation and ageing take place entirely in wood. After fermentation, the wine is stirred weekly for three months, then matures for around ten months in French barriques and for at least six months in bottle. This gives it volume, a creamy texture and a harmonious presence.
Character and flavour
In the glass it is a bright, intense yellow. The nose shows exotic fruit such as pineapple, rose petals and fine toasty notes. On the palate it is complex and refined, full-bodied yet elegant, with creamy depth, saline freshness and a long finish supported by well-integrated oak. The source also records recurring recognition from Bibenda, James Suckling, Decanter, Falstaff, Wine Spectator and others.
Food pairing, serving temperature and cellaring
It pairs very well with aromatic starters, fish, cheese and white meat.
Elena Walch also indicates an ageing potential of around 15 to 18 years, thanks to the wine’s structure and élevage.
